WHATS YOUR STYLE?
Look for a newborn photographer whose styling you like. Do you like simple images where the focus is just on baby, or do you like more styled intricate setups? Do you like organic, natural colors or do you prefer bright bold colors? All of these things put together are what makes up a photographers style, find a newborn photographer whose images you’re drawn to and you could easily see decorating your home.
POSED SESSIONS VS LIFESTYLE SESSIONS
Do you prefer posed newborn images or images of baby in their nursery, or being rocked in Mama’s arms? All of my newborn sessions are posed, while I am happy to get some images of my client’s around their home with their new baby, I don’t offer a session with just those images. There are however, lots of lifestyle newborn photographers who would be happy to deliver beautiful images of your baby and family at home, without doing any posed images.
ON THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY…
Safety is so, so important when it comes to working with these tiny beautiful babies. Please make sure that when you’re selecting your newborn photographer they are well educated in how to keep your baby safe during a session. Ask if they’ve taken any workshops or mentored with an established newborn photographer. Safety is always covered during any type of reputable newborn photography education. Many images of newborns are actually 2 images put together in Photoshop for safety reasons.
WHERE WILL THE SESSION TAKE PLACE?
Would you prefer the ease of having your newborn photographer come to your home for your session? Or would you prefer to go to a studio?
ALL-INCLUSIVE VS SESSION FEE & PRODUCTS SEPARATE
Are having the digital files important to you? Do you want to pay one set price for the digital files and session together? Or would you prefer to pay a session fee and then select your files and prints or other products after you’ve seen the images? There are certainly benefits to both options, but knowing which would be better for your family is going to help you weed out photographers who don’t offer the end product you’re wanting.
CHECK FOR CLIENT REVIEWS
If you’ve found a newborn photographer whose style you like, who offers the products you want, take a peek at their Facebook page, look on Google, and read other client’s reviews.
IF IT’S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE…
I’m sure this will be controversial to say but are they a true professional? If someone is calling themselves a professional newborn photographer and is only charging $50-$100 for a session with a disc of 75+ images, they aren’t a professional. The truth is when you select someone to photography your new baby, you’re trusting them with the most precious person in your world, and we all know what they say about prices that are too good to be true. Photography isn’t a cheap business to run, and newborn photography is no exception.
